Members of the Ipswich Bach Choir are absolutely delighted that Dr Merlin Channon has recently agreed to become their President.
Dr Channon's first association with IBC was in 1957 when he became the conductor for five years before moving out of the area. He was unanimously re-elected conductor when he returned to Suffolk in 1975 and spent twelve more happy years directing many successful concerts. He was also conductor of Eye Bach Choir, with whom Ipswich Bach Choir have often performed jointly, the last occasion being the Verdi Requiem in 2005.
An unfailing supporter of IBC over the years, he attends all its concerts and is always an encouraging and appreciative presence. Present Musical Director, Patrick McCarthy remarked, “When it was proposed that he should be asked to take on the role of President there was another positive and unanimous reaction from the Choir for this to happen!”
